Imperfect Beauty: LEESER Architecture Challenges the Rules of Luxury Living
In Manhattan’s SoHo district, LEESER Architecture has transformed a penthouse loft into an unconventional residence that challenges the polished perfection of contemporary luxury interiors. Here, irregularity, contrasting materials and unexpected spatial experiences take centre stage.

Rather than following the familiar language of immaculate finishes and precise geometric compositions, the architects embrace imperfection as a defining design principle.

Marble plays a central role, but not in the traditional sense. Slabs of different sizes, colours and textures are arranged in seemingly spontaneous compositions, covering floors, walls and a striking sculptural staircase. Their irregular placement creates an architectural landscape that feels almost accidental, yet carefully considered.
Reclaimed timber flooring, exposed brickwork and simple painted surfaces introduce another layer of contrast. Expensive stone meets modest materials, while the building’s industrial character remains visible throughout the interior.

The generous proportions of the loft allow these different elements to coexist. High ceilings, large windows and open living spaces preserve the atmosphere of the original building, while contemporary interventions redefine how its spaces are experienced.
In the bedroom, a freestanding bathtub sits openly beside the bed, challenging the conventional separation between sleeping and bathing areas.

Perhaps the most surprising transformation occurs outdoors. The rooftop terraces are entirely covered in a geometric pattern that extends across floors, walls and sloping surfaces. Against the familiar Manhattan skyline, the effect is almost surreal, turning an ordinary terrace into an immersive architectural experience.

House A reflects LEESER Architecture’s belief that architecture should question conventions rather than reproduce familiar solutions.

The result is a residence where contrasts remain deliberately unresolved and where imperfection becomes a source of character, originality and unexpected beauty.
