Henecka Architekten embeds a courtyard house into the vineyard landscape

Set within the vineyards of Bruchsal, Germany, the Vineyard House by Henecka Architekten BDA is conceived as a quiet intervention in the landscape.

Rather than dominating its surroundings, the low, white volume follows the sloping terrain and appears almost embedded within it. A planted roof further reduces the visual presence of the house, allowing the architecture to merge with the surrounding vegetation and vineyards.

Living around a central patio

The house is organised around a central courtyard, which becomes the spatial heart of the project.

Large glazed openings create continuous visual connections between the interior, the patio and the surrounding landscape. From the living and dining areas, views extend through the courtyard towards the garden, giving the single-storey plan a surprising sense of depth.

The patio also brings daylight and greenery deep into the interior while creating a sheltered outdoor space at the centre of the home.

Architecture as landscape

A restrained palette reinforces the clarity of the concept.

White rendered walls define the architecture, while bronze-toned window frames introduce a warmer layer. Inside, natural wood cabinetry, soft neutral surfaces and carefully selected furniture add warmth without competing with the surrounding landscape.

The architecture is deliberately calm. Long horizontal walls, generous glazing and planted courtyards create a sequence of spaces in which interior and exterior continuously overlap.

Seen from above, the house almost disappears into the vineyard. Only its white perimeter walls, courtyards and linear paths reveal the presence of the architecture.

Vineyard House demonstrates how a residential project can establish a strong identity through restraint, using topography, landscape and courtyard space as its primary architectural elements.
